Export your project to a Gantt chart

Over the last few years we have received lots of requests from users wanting to generate a Gantt chart view of their projects. We have been in two minds about adding this feature as a core Teamwork feature as we feel Gantt charts are only really interesting to a small percentage of our users. Since our tag line has has ways been, Project Management Made Easy, we felt adding Gantt charts could potentially scare the pants off our target user base.

Last week we bit the bullet and released a feature that hopefully looks after both camps - those who want Gantt charts and those who want easy project management. Instead of going full force into the charting world we decided the best approach would be to interface with existing Gantt applications. We have built in a new Export to Gantt feature. You now have the ability to export your Tasks and Milestones to either MS Project or the free Gantt chart viewer called Gantt Project.

There are a number of ways to export your data:

1: Via the task page. Go to the bottom of the column on the left and select Gantt chart export:

You will be presented with a choice to export to MS Project or Gantt Project format. Select the option which applies to you.

If you go with Gantt Project export as your choice, we also supply you with a link to download the free viewer if you don’t already have one.
Once the viewer is downloaded and running choose the import option and then click on your downloaded file to see your project within Gantt Project.

2. Via the project options page. Click the Project Settings tab in a project and choose Gantt Chart Export

Would it be possible to also import MS Project and Project Gantt files? In other words, we can build a Project Plan on either on and then import the file into TeamworkPM.net - keeping the dependencies, resource assignments, etc.

Let me know. Thanks!

Hi there,
This is a great move... While I still believe Gantt charts should optionally be included in TeamWorkPM, (ie show or hide them, just like you can show or hide resources/notebooks/files tabs etc), was wondering if you could also export to the Gantter.com format?

Like, teamworkpm, gantter.com is webbased and I think would be a much nicer experience for users than crossing to essentially offline apps like MS Project and GanttProject...

Great to know your thoughts.

Thanks
Tom

Any chance of supporting Fasttrack Schedule for us Mac users?
Keeping it simple and not having a Gantt function does not make any sense, who don't need to use a function will simple ignore it while who will make use of it (myself) will just use it.

You don't want to build the functionality in your software, fine, it's your decision of course, just don't find silly excuses for it :)

@Gian - there's nothing silly about being deliberate with how features are presented.

I need Gantt capability, but I also know that other users who I *need* to use teamwork with me for me to gain max benefit would be freaked out if there's any more buttons present - whether they intend to use them or not.

One way to manage this is (maybe) to let admins turn on features that are, by default, off. This hits the other tradeoff issue - development.

Overall, TW team: nice job.

@Dan, I'm not saying it's silly, I'm just saying that I don't want to export to another product, I don't want to use 10 different products to achieve a project management task.

As you said the administrator should have the possibility to hide features, just like is possible now to hide some features like the risk register, etc...

I'm willing to pay double for a product that I can keep simple for some projects and more sophisticated when I need it.

It's been a year and still no Gantt capabilities? It's such a basic important feature it's such a shame that teamworkPM doesn't have it. Otherwise it'd be a perfect PM software
